The art of user stories: Could Jules Verne be considered a well-defined Scrum Product Owner?

Jules Verne, the celebrated French author — and my favorite childhood story-teller — lived from 1828 to 1905 and is well known for his vivid imagination and works of science fiction. While the concept of Scrum and agile methodologies did not exist during Verne’s time, it’s interesting to explore how his writing style and imaginative narratives align with the role of a Scrum Product Owner, specifically in the context of user stories.

Visionary Storytelling:
Verne’s novels, such as “Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea” and “Journey to the Center of the Earth” are characterized by their visionary storytelling. In a similar vein, a Scrum Product Owner holds the responsibility of articulating and envisioning the end-user’s needs, desires and experiences and maximize the value of the product he/she is responsible of. Verne’s ability to create captivating narratives suggests that he could potentially excel in formulating compelling user stories that inspire and guide development teams.
Deep Understanding of User Needs:
Jules Verne’s heroes often embark on extraordinary journeys driven by a desire to explore, discover, or fulfill a specific purpose. As a Scrum Product Owner, Verne’s deep understanding of the user needs and motivations exhibited in his novels would be invaluable. By crafting user stories that encapsulate the users’ goals and aspirations, Verne would effectively communicate the users’ perspectives and provide clear direction to the development team, rocketing the user’s experience to the sky!
Attention to Detail:
Through his meticulous attention to detail in his descriptions of settings, technologies and scientific concepts showcases his ability to create immersive worlds. In a similar way, an effective Scrum Product Owner is keen on providing precise details and acceptance criteria within user stories, ensuring that the team understands the desired outcome and can deliver a high-quality product. Verne’s detailed authoring aligns with the requirement for clear and well-defined user stories in Scrum.
Embracing Complexity:
Verne’s stories often revolve around intricate plots and multifaceted challenges. Similarly, the Scrum Product Owner must navigate complexity, prioritize competing demands, make informed decisions and keep the stakeholders satisfied with the results.
